Five Jharkhand Labourers Trapped in Cameroon Appeal for Repatriation

Jharkhand Spirit : In yet another distressing incident involving migrant workers, five labourers from Jharkhand have reported being stranded in Cameroon, Africa. The workers—hailing from Giridih and Hazaribagh districts—claim their employer has stopped paying their wages and is not providing proper food or accommodation, leaving them in severe hardship.

The stranded workers shared a video message detailing their plight and urgently appealed to the Indian government for help in returning home. They sent the video to social worker Sikandar Ali, who works extensively on migrant labour issues. Ali has since released the video to the media and urged the government to take immediate diplomatic action to ensure their safe repatriation.

Social Worker Seeks Government Intervention

Sikandar Ali noted that incidents of Jharkhand’s migrant labourers being exploited abroad are not new. He pointed out that many workers, in the hope of earning better wages, end up trapped in foreign countries under difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions. While some have been rescued after significant effort, others remain stranded.

Earlier this month, the government facilitated the return of 48 migrant workers stuck in Tunisia. However, five labourers from Bagodar in Giridih, reportedly kidnapped in Niger about seven months ago, are still awaiting rescue. Meanwhile, the body of Vijay Kumar Mahato, a migrant worker from Dumri in Giridih, has been lying in Saudi Arabia for over a month without repatriation.

The labourers currently trapped in Cameroon have been identified as Sunil Mahato and Sukar Mahato from Unchaghana in Hazaribagh’s Vishnugarh area, Chandra Shekhar Kumar from Kargalo, Dilon Mahato, and Dilchand Mahato from Dumri in Giridih district.

Their families and supporters are urging both the central and state governments to act swiftly to bring them back safely.
